Specialists in certain fields are required to take exams to obtain certification, prove their competence and expertise. This is a serious matter when the test-takers’ careers and professional advancements might be at stake. In order to guarantee the integrity of the testing process and protect the value of test results, Prometric implements a rigorous security policy. The policy determines the way Prometric center verifies the test-taker’s identity, checks their belongings, allows breaks during the exam, etc. This blog provides a detailed overview of what to expect on an exam day and what to prepare for.
It is quite obvious that the more you know about what your exam day might look like, the less anxious you feel, and the better you perform. The specific guidelines on what you are required/allowed to bring to the test center may differ from one exam to another and can also depend on the specifics of the test. It is always a good idea to check the official website of your test provider to find out more about their guidelines if there are any.
The general requirement to be admitted to any Prometric testing center is providing a government-issued ID. The ID must be valid on the day of your test, must have your photo and signature. Your test provider may also give you guidelines on what type of ID is required in different countries. Prepare to arrive at least 30 minutes before your exam start time, so you have time for parking, going through the registration process and settling in before your test.
2. Checking in
Upon arrival at Prometric center, you will be greeted and welcomed by a Test Centre Administrator (TCA). Present your ID and sign in as required.
Once you’re signed in, the TCA will give you any materials you need for the exam. This may be blank paper and writing utensils or a calculator.
The TCA will show you to your locker and provide you with a key. This is for all your personal belongings as you may not take anything into the exam room except for what is provided and/or approved. You will keep your ID and your locker key with you during the exam.
Your examining body may require biometric sign-in. In such a case, a digital reader will be used to scan your fingertips and check your ID.
As part of the security check at Prometric testing center, you’ll need to turn your pockets inside out and show the TCA that they are empty, raise your pant legs above your ankles, push sleeves above your wrists. Then you will be scanned with a metal detector prior to entering the test room. This will happen each time you enter the test room after taking a break as well.
3. What is allowed and what is prohibited
Prometric takes security very seriously, so your accessories may be inspected before entering the exam, or you may be asked to remove them and leave them in your locker. Only eyeglasses, wedding and engagement rings are permitted. Please refrain from wearing any other jewelry or hair accessories.
Watches, coats, or any electronic devices, purses, food, drink, hats, etc. are not permitted in the exam room. Violation of this security policy may result in confiscation of your devices and termination of your exam. Try to follow the simple rule: the less you bring to the test center, the better.
4. Break policy
Once in the room, the proctor or a TCA will explain the rules and regulations that apply to the Prometric testing center and to the test. This is your time to ask any questions regarding the test procedure that you may have. If you have questions during the exam, raise your hand to have a proctor come to assist you.
Break policy at Prometric centers is also strict. You will be given a colour coded key ring for your locker key to give TCAs and you a complete understanding of what is permitted on breaks during the exam. Your access to the locker during an exam might be full or limited, or you might not have it at all.
