The CAEL Exam: Purpose, Procedures, Preparation

What is the CAEL Exam?

CAEL is an acronym for "Canadian Academic English Language." It is a test that assesses the English language skills of students planning to study at Canadian post-secondary institutions. The test was initially created in 1978 at Carleton University and evaluates candidates' reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities in English. Paragon obtained the test in 2015, and it has been computer-based since 2017. Students have the option to take it either online or in-person at a testing center such as Ashton Testing Services (ATS). Starting in 2023, CAEL has also been approved by Immigration and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for students wanting to use their test results from a test center to apply for an expedited study permit through the Student Direct Stream (SDS). This applies to prospective students from countries such as India, the Philippines, and China.

Why CAEL?

According to the CAEL website, the test is considered the leading academic English test for study in Canada and has been designed by linguistic experts. It is one of the best tools for identifying students with the right English skills for academic success in Canada. The test is accepted by all major Canadian post-secondary institutions, more specifically, by 180 colleges, universities, and professional institutions across the country. Additionally, there are many free and paid practice resources, and candidates receive their online test results quickly after only eight business days. Even a selection of scholarships is available for test-takers, as are feedback and support services. These range from CAEL’s active online communities on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Weibo, and WeChat to phone and chat customer service.

Exam Details

Writing the CAEL exam takes approximately 3.5 hours and provides an authentic representation of academic language use in Canadian post-secondary classrooms. As mentioned, the test consists of four components: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The speaking portion of the test is done using a computer only, without a human examiner. Test takers read articles, listen to lectures, answer questions, and write short essays, mimicking everyday tasks assigned in a first-year Canadian university or college classroom. Each test contains components that are not marked and are included to evaluate and improve the test for the future. Additional requirements may vary between locations and depend on whether the test is taken online or in person. Generally, online test-takers require their ID, a compatible and up-to-date computer system, and specific room requirements. In person-test-takers only need their ID as well as a copy of the test confirmation email. Inside Canada, the test costs CAN $280 dollars plus taxes, but prices may vary internationally. You may retake the exam if you are not satisfied with your results. However, you will have to wait at least four calendar days.

How Can I Register?

Every candidate is required to register online through the CAEL website as test centres do not process registrations directly. You can register up to 2-3 days prior to the scheduled test date. Early registration is encouraged to ensure that you will secure a spot on your preferred date.

How to Prepare for the Test

Familiarizing yourself with the exam format and concepts is crucial to avoid stress during the real exam, improve your knowledge, and know what to expect. It also gives you the opportunity to find out what areas you should focus on while preparing. One of the tips highlighted by CAEL experts for the speaking portion of the test is to practice with friends, family, and co-workers, as well as reading aloud from academic and formal texts such as news and journal articles. Recording and listening to yourself can also be beneficial in making you feel more confident and prepared for your exam day. This can also help you notice and correct your own mistakes and weaknesses prior to the real test. Establishing a study routine, taking breaks, and reviewing the exam content at the right time of day can also boost your success. Test takers can make use of more than 15 free preparation resources on the CAEL website to achieve the best possible exam results. These resources include two free online sample tests, blog posts, expert study tips, and webinars. Additionally, there is a weekly, free YouTube broadcast featuring CAEL experts, guest speakers from Canadian post-secondary institutions, and former candidates describing their experiences with the exam and sharing their takeaways. Finally, there are paid materials available in CAEL’s designated online store, including many additional practice tests, study guides, and courses.
