What is the TCF Quebec test?

The Test de connaissance du français pour le Québec or TCF Quebec is a French-language proficiency test designed to meet the needs of the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Diversité et de l’Inclusion (MIDI) du Québec. Click here for TCFQ FAQs.

Who should take the TCF Quebec Test?

Anyone, regardless of their nationality and native language, who would like to initiate the process of permanent economic immigration procedures with the Quebec Ministry of Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion. TCFQ is intended only for those who wish to settle in Québec (Certificat de Sélection du Québec).

TCF Quebec Test Format

The TCF Québec consists of 4 modules to evaluate the level of proficiency in oral and written skills:

  • Oral comprehension: 25 min – 29 questions
  • Written comprehension: 45 min – 29 questions
  • Written expression: 60 min – 3 topics
  • Oral expression: 12 min – 3 topics

The TCF Québec evaluates a candidate’s French skills on a scale with six levels (from A1 to C2) established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

An official certificate of results (valid for two years) will be delivered to each candidate within 4 to 8 weeks after the test. The certificate will show the score obtained for each module.

  • A non-refundable fee of $75 will be charged in case of a cancellation or rescheduling before the registration deadline.
  • No refund or change of test date will be accepted if a request is received after the registration deadline.
  • No refund or credit will be granted under any circumstances past the deadlines mentioned above unless Ashton Testing Services has to cancel the test, in which case an alternative exam date will be offered, or a full refund will be granted.
  • In case a candidate is not allowed to enter the exam room (for example if the candidate is not carrying their passport), fees will not be refunded. The candidate will be allowed to submit another application after one month.
  • Payment must be made in full at the time of registration.
  • Candidates must be at least 16 years of age.No prior qualification is required to take the exam.
  • Candidates may take the test several times, allowing a minimum of one month between two exam sessions.
