If you are planning to immigrate to Canada and are looking at the ways to increase the number of points in your application, taking a TEF Canada exam might be a good idea. It can be beneficial if you have a fluent command of the French language, and you are confident you can score well. Read this blog to find more about this test and who can benefit from it.
Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) was created in 1998 by the Paris Ile-de-France CCI as an international benchmark test to measure fluency in French for non-native speakers. Since then, it has become a global benchmark that assesses test-takers’ language knowledge and skills for a variety of purposes.
TEF is often required as proof of French language competency in academic, professional or immigration context. For example, its results are required to be admitted to universities in France, also while obtaining French nationality or French residency card. Different test formats are used in each of the situations mentioned above.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has recognized the TEF for immigration purposes in 2002. The test format that is used for this function is called TEF Canada. Make sure you understand the difference between the test types and find out which one you need to take before TEF exam booking.
Based on the purpose of the test, its content can vary. The mandatory components of TEF Canada differ depending on whether the test is being taken for a Canadian immigration or Canadian citizenship application.
For Canadian immigration application, the test consists of the following parts:
Oral comprehension: 40 min – 60 questions Written comprehension: 60 min – 50 questions Oral expression: 15 min – 2 topics to cover Written expression: 60 min – 2 topics to cover
For Canadian citizenship application, the test includes these components:
Oral comprehension: 40 min – 60 questions Oral expression: 15 min – 2 topics to cover
Another important aspect to keep in mind before proceeding with the TEF Canada exam registration is that all test components listed above must be completed on the same day. Otherwise, the TEF Canada certificate might not be recognized by the Canadian authorities. Make sure you plan your test day accordingly.
TEF Canada exam registration is held year-round in multiple test locations in Canada and around the world. Although the test availability is pretty good, it’s better if you check the test centres and the dates they offer well in advance. Taking a TEF Canada test is not required for immigrating to Canada if you are coming to an English-speaking community. However, if you know both official languages, English and French, taking a test in each of them will add points to your immigration application. If you are planning to immigrate to Quebec, you will be required to take a different type of exam, which is called TEF Quebec.
